OUR SPECIAL LUNCHEON SPEAKER

  • EARL CASEY
    CNN International
  • Earl Casey first sat behind a newsroom typewriter 45 years ago this May. May 29 1965.

Lyndon Johnson was President, a war in Vietnam was just beginning, the Civil Rights Act was slowly beginning to transform the South. A 17-year-old math major with acne, just dumped by his high school girlfriend, was writing news copy and learning to shoot black and white television news film in Monroe, Louisiana.

Eleven years passed in Louisiana. Next, television news roles in Houston, Detroit, then Washington DC as Jimmy Carter left town and Ronald Reagan arrived.

It was late 1981. Cable News Network had been in existence one full year, and had exhausted its tireless staff. Earl moved to Atlanta, his dream home town, and joined CNN as managing editor. In those days, Ted Turner would walk barefoot through the newsroom, in clothes he probably slept in, to get morning coffee before the sun came up.

Today, 28 years later, CNN has changed and is changing still. In those years in between, Earl has worked in a variety of roles at CNN, as managing editor, head of newsgathering in the United States, producer, public relations, and currently as director of international news planning. He left CNN briefly three times, once for burnout, once to help write Jerry Jeff Walker’s biography, and once because he was fired. They asked him to return, just before 9/11.

At CNN, he’s been most proud of his role in hiring and encouraging the young journalists who, over those years, have run the place. And proud of forming the team which launched CNN.com.

In the real world outside CNN, Earl is immensely proud of his family, especially his wife Loretta. They have two strong young football players, John and Luke. Earl has four grandchildren. Earl’s daughter Erin is a teacher in Georgia, and son Sean is an attorney in Mandeville.

He’s also secretly proud of an old brass belt buckle in his closet, a souvenir of another era which has the inscription “ Newsman. Truth, Justice, and the American Way”
